In the summer of 1993 I returned to São Luis, Brasil, where I had lived as a child. These pictures are a portrait of
the town as I found it, influenced by how I remembered it. Some are photographs of festivals known as
Bumba-Meu-Boi and São João, a mix of Catholic and African traditions celebrated in the
Northeast of Brasil in places like São Luis.
